Movie Info

When a terrified family flees a desolate southern New Zealand farmhouse, two cynical scientists and a young psychic are sent to investigate their claims of a haunting. There they encounter a powerful spirit that will protect the house's secrets at all cost. The Dead Room is inspired by the chilling urban legend surrounding a farmhouse in Central Otago, New Zealand. In the early 1970s, two science tutors went to debunk claims a rural house was haunted and uncovered an incredibly disturbing mystery.

Regrettably, The Dead Room is forgettable and almost dull due to the fact that the storyline and scares are conventional.

Contrived, predictable and free of any kind of electricity, Jason Stutter's The Dead Room... is nothing more than a scare-less and, overall pointless, bore.

The Dead Room is a haunted endeavor better left unexplored, as it's marred by a soul-sucking lack of ambition.

Audience Reviews for The Dead Room

Part of me wonders if I had watched this on Saturday instead of Most Likely To Die, when I was in a great mood, seemingly, if I would have been as forgiving to this film as I was to the former. In all honesty, this film just isn't good at all. And it's not even like the film has a lot of potential to go places to begin with. Sometimes you see a film that might not be good, but it has ambitious ideas and that makes watching better because at least they make an effort to try some different things, even if those things might not always work. But this movie does the minimum that is required to just get by. Though I'm readily willing to admit the fact that I didn't find to be Most Likely's lacks of ambition to not be as bad. But, at the very least, that was a slasher, so if nothing else, at least you had some gore to get you through. This movie doesn't even have that. Though, to be fair, this is meant to be more of a ghost story. But, the fact of the matter is that I've seen some really great ghost stories, The Others immediately comes to mind, that the fact that this basically relies on doing the same thing over and over again, with only very slight variations, does make the movie a little dull. Movies like this work because, first of all, you have great atmospheric chills, something in the air that gives off the vibe that anything could happen at any moment. It makes it feel like the characters are never safe no matter what they do or where they hide. This movie fails at that, so when the shit does hit the fan, it doesn't really feel like the characters are really in danger, it feels more like what is scripted, there's no suspension disbelief involved here. Thankfully the movie itself is really short, so it's not like it overstays its welcome. Well I mean it does in that there's absolutely nothing about this that would be even remotely interesting to a horror fan, but it's a movie that's over in about 76 minutes, so the suffering doesn't go on for that long. Some of the scenes just look really low-budget. It's clear they didn't have a lot of money for this, but some of the scenes are just laughably bad. The acting isn't very good on top of that, which is the icing on top of the shit cake. I will admit that it could have been worse, but it still sucked. The actress who played Holly was just no good at all. One of the positives, might be the only positive, is that the last couple of minutes are somewhat decent. Once you finally get to see the 'monster' or whatever. That was at least somewhat bearable. Everything else, eh, kinda sucked. As if you couldn't have noticed, I didn't like this movie at all. It just fails at almost everything that it sets out to do. So, yea, don't watch this. You'd be doing yourself a favor.
